Self-care tips from our wellbeing coordinators
It’s International Self-Care Day today (24 July) so we asked our wellbeing coordinators to share how they look after themselves. The answers were beautifully simple: a mindful cup of coffee, a morning dog walk, listening to birdsong, reading a good book, or just taking a moment to breathe.
It reminds us that self-care doesn’t have to be big or time-consuming – it just has to be yours.
Take a moment for you and find some self-care inspiration below.
Connection with nature
Recharge by spending time outdoors – walking, visiting the beach, sitting in the garden, or tuning in to the sights and sounds of nature.
- “Before work, I like to go to the beach to eat my breakfast listening to the sea, watching the waves and feeling the sun on my face. It really sets me up for the day.”
- “I make a conscious effort to tune into nature when I’m walking, for example by noticing the bird song.”
- “I spend time in nature with my dog.”
Mindfulness and slowing down
Slowing down with intention – taking a moment to be present, savour a drink, or enjoy daily routines mindfully.
- “I enjoy intentionally slowing down – from mindfully making a cup of tea, through to a slow walk along the beach collecting stones and shells.”
- “I drink a cup of coffee mindfully in bed before I get up and start my day.”
- “I try to incorporate small things during the day that bring me joy and allow me to pause, such as listening to a favourite song.”
Physical activity
Movement of any kind can lift energy and clear the mind – it’s about what works for you.
- “I enjoy staying active through regular walks”
- “I walk or run around the Purbecks as often as I can, usually three times per week.”
- “For me, I start my day with supplements and a workout which puts me in a good headspace.”
- “My intention is to start up yoga again.”
- “I do a handstand!”
Rituals and small joys
Simple rituals like morning coffee, tea in bed, or reading bring comfort and joy.
- “My morning cup of tea is precious to me – the house is quiet and I can take a moment to reflect”
- “I have replaced my morning coffee in bed with a glass of water and a slice of lemon.”
- “I plan to start listening to audiobooks again.”
Quiet time alone
Many people value time alone – to think, rest, or start the day gently before the world wakes up.
- “I wake up an hour before the rest of the household to have a fresh coffee (preferably in the garden) with only the sound of the birds.”
- “I like to find a small amount of time each day to be alone with my thoughts and consciously think of myself and what I need. If I am not looked after, I can’t look after others.”
Social connection
Friendships, family time, and pets remind us we don’t have to do it all alone.
- “My self care tips are spending time with my friends playing video games and also going to see my family.”
- “I enjoy playing netball with friends”
Recharging and self-awareness
Sometimes we all need a reminder to make time to recharge – whether you do it now or plan it in for the future.
- “Time spent recharging your batteries is always time well spent.”
- “I would like to book in a head and shoulder massage.”
- “I make sure I take time to unwind and recharge.”
